ONE Historical Walking Tour
Elmwood Cemetery, historian Elise Guyette will lead a tour of the graves of some of Burlington’s black citizens, including those who were Revolutionary War Veterans and some who provided safe harbor to those seeking freedom on the Underground Railroad. A few served powerful people as servants and laborers, while others were skilled barbers, cooks, nurses, and homemakers. All were buried in the northern half of the cemetery, which was segregated at the time it was built. Elise’s research brings to light new facets on a plot more noted for Burlington notables, such as Frances Allen, Ethan’s widow, naturalist Zadock Thompson, city founder John Norton Pomeroy, and merchant Gideon King.
Stop by our booth before or after the tour to get some swag and a copy of our latest newsle
